Learn more about our curriculum

Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which supports children from birth until they leave their reception year at school, aged 5. This curriculum is continuous and we recognise that children join our nursery at different starting points and develop at different rates. Our skilled staff are able to adapt our teaching to meet your child's individual needs and interests.

Phonics

In the nursery we introduce the children to the skills of listening to and talking about sounds. We play with sounds and explore sound patterns through games, stories and songs.  We follow Stage 0 of The Song of Sounds phonics scheme which includes a focus on * Environmental Sounds  *Instrumental Sounds  *Body percussion  *Rhythm and Rhyme  *Alliteration  *Voice sounds  *Oral blending and Segmenting

Once the children are secure in these skills, we begin to learn the letter sounds through characters, actions and simple songs.

Number

We follow the White Rose number scheme for Nursery which encourages children to explore through practical resources and play around with number concepts to develop a deep understanding. Throughout the year, we focus on numbers; recognition, counting and comparing numbers and also on the language of number; more, fewer, next, order etc.

We work in both small, focused groups and through natural play opportunities to explore and embed the number skills needed to ensure children are ready for school.

 Forest school

Our nursery children absolutely love their weekly forest school session in our on-site forest school. This is a chance to learn more about the natural world, use natural resources to support their learning and make links with what they have learnt during the week. They love to dig, swing, cook, build shelters and talk together!
