Nurture UK
NurtureUK is underpinned by the six principles of nurture:
Our NurtureUK provision provides a space where children are able to access the curriculum in a safe, nurturing environment whilst striving to improve the social, emotional, mental health and wellbeing of children.
Our key aims for delivering NurtureUK’s provision are:
- To ensure children’s needs are fully understood and used to guide provision within the NurtureUK hub.
- To develop children’s social skills to enhance focus within the classroom as well as greater positive interactions with peers.
- To support children’s anxiety surrounding school and the classroom environment.
- To provide children with fundamental life skills to support children’s holistic life-long development.
The NurtureUK hub uses the Greenfields Hive and our additional classroom, Juniper. Our settings have different ‘zones’, such as a calm circle-time area, work area, food preparation area and outdoor learning space.
As well as following the National Curriculum objectives, we aim to teach life-skill objectives too. These include personal hygiene, balanced diets and independence.
Snack Time
Each NurtureUK session has snack time which supports children to explicitly model, teach and reinforce social skills, such as turn-taking and reciprocating conversation appropriately.
Outdoor Learning
As part of our NurtureUK curriculum, we believe applying the learning to real-life scenarios and outdoor experiences is valuable to enrichment learning opportunities. The children engage weekly in gardening and forest school/outdoor settings to apply their science curriculum in different contexts and see the learning in ‘real-life’.
Assessment
Children’s individual needs are assessed using the Boxall Profile which provides us with a precise picture of a pupil’s strengths, as well as any difficulties which could affect their learning. Based on these assessments, the Boxall Profile also identifies what type of support each pupil needs with practical strategies and techniques to help them achieve their full potential.
