Greenfields Hive

3 Tiered approach to supporting children’s emotional needs and promoting their welfare

Tier 1 - Brain breaks - Short term regulation activity

A child who is struggling to stay focused on activities for longer periods of time, who is finding the classroom environment overwhelming or the work inaccessible, will be given the opportunity to take the brain break box outside their classroom for a limited period of time (This should be for no longer than 10 minutes at any one time, this will be shown with the use of a visual timer). The child will then return to the classroom to continue with the activity set. During and after this time, the class teacher will establish with the child why this brain break was needed. E.g. Are they finding the classroom too stimulating? Are they finding the work too hard? Are they feeling anxious/overwhelmed?

Tier 2 - Hive intervention - Respite support

A child who is becoming more dysregulated resulting in persistent disruptive behaviour will access the Hive in order to work away from the rest of the class for the duration of that session. These children require a longer time away from the classroom environment with the purpose of giving them and others respite from the current situation. The child will be expected to complete the work set by the class teacher, whilst in the Hive. During this time, they will be supported by the pastoral team.

Tier 3 - Sensory room - Dysregulated behaviour - aggressive, violent, intimidating behaviour

A child who is at crisis point and is completely dysregulated will be taken to the sensory room. A member of the pastoral team will monitor and support the child during this time. Once calm, the child will spend time in the Hive having restorative conversations and identifying self regulation strategies to better manage their behaviour. If and when the child feels ready, they will be taken back to class and re-integrated back into the class’ activity.
